New Staff Interview: Ms. Sophia King

We caught up with our new Academic Assistant and Teacher Apprentice Sophia King, who went to Coram Deo Academy as a student through 10th grade. These interview questions are intended to help us get to know her better. She teaches Latin, assists in various classes, and is engaging in a CDA teacher training process.

1) Are you married?

I am not married, but I am engaged! My fiancé Joel and I are getting married this October. We met at Taylor University in 2021 where we were both students. We dated for seven months before Joel proposed in February. I am so excited to step into marriage with my best friend!

2) Where did you go to school?

I attended Taylor University for two and a half years, studying political science. This past December I decided to finish my degree online through Liberty University and will graduate with a B.A. in political science in December.

3) What gets you up in the morning?

Every morning I wake up excited for the little joys that the Lord provides throughout the day! And of course my multiple alarms help too.

4) What are your favorite hobbies?

I love spending time outside, reading a good book, and going for bike rides to get Rita’s Italian Ice with my fiancé. I love collecting old books and I always have a stack of new books to read!

5) What is one of your hidden talents?

I love baking and I have recently perfected my chocolate chip cookie recipe.

6) What is your favorite book and why?

It’s hard for me to pick one favorite book, but if I had to it would be The Great Gatsby. I love Fitzgerald’s work because he creates a world that I feel nostalgic for, even though I have never experienced life in New York in the 1920s. I also believe it has one of the best movie adaptations.

7) How long have you lived in Indiana and why do you enjoy living here?

I was born and raised in Indiana. One of my favorite things about Indiana is watching the beautiful sunsets every night.

8) What meaningful event in your past significantly influenced your life?

When I was a sophomore in high school, I went on my first mission trip to Haiti. There I experienced God’s grace and redemption through his people. It was such a gift to witness people who loved Jesus so fiercely even though they lived what many would assume to be miserable lives. It became quite evident to me that their faith was greater than any possession they could ever own. Coming back home was a very humbling experience as people around me complained about such trivial things. It was at this point in my life that I knew I wanted to live differently. I never wanted to fall into the trap of materialism. I always want my faith and my love for the Lord to be far greater than any other love I could ever have.

9) What historical figure would you like to spend a day with?

I honestly don’t think I could ever choose one historical figure to spend a day with. There are far too many people that I would want to get to know. Just a few of these people include the apostle Paul, Martin Luther, George Washington, C.S. Lewis, and Queen Elizabeth.

10) What would we be surprised to learn about you?

Even though I am not able to keep a plant alive for more than a month or two, my fiancé and I continue collecting plants for our first home.
