New Faculty Interview- Trish Sims

We are so excited to announce that Mrs. Trish Sims has joined our faculty as the Art Teacher. Mrs. Sims has been teaching art in the area for 20 years. She and her husband, along with their two grown children, are members of Castleton Community Church.

We caught up with Mrs. Sims in order to help the community learn more about her.

1) Are you married? Kids?

My husband, David, and I have been married 30 years. We have two grown children. Our daughter, Hailey is an RN and our son, Austin, is a Mechanical Engineer. Both live in town.

2) Where did you go to school?

I graduated from Purdue University. I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with special emphasis in photography and graphic arts.

3) What gets you up in the morning?

The next adventure! Anyone who knows me knows I don’t sit well. God has provided us a beautiful world to explore and I wish to see and experience as much of it as possible.

4) What are your favorite hobbies?

Some of my favorite hobbies include kayaking, camping, hiking, scrapbooking, and card making.

5) What is your favorite book and why?

As an avid reader, it would be hard for me to choose a favorite. However, in the last year, I would say Do You Love Me?: Giving Up the American Dream to Serve the Underprivileged  by George Sisneros would be at the top of my nonfiction list. Mr. Sisneros is a missionary in Guatemala. Last year I was blessed to travel with Filter of Hope and Castleton Community Church to help distribute over 100 water filters to those in need in the outskirts of Antigua, Guatemala. This book gave me eyes to really see the local people, their struggles and how to best connect and pray with them and for them.

6) How long have you lived in Indiana and why do you enjoy living here?

I was born in Indiana and have never called anywhere else home. I love the change of the seasons!

7) Describe a meaningful event in your life and God’s role in that event.

This past summer I had the privilege of baptizing my son! What a blessed day. It was preceded by years of God-filled conversation. It is one of the greatest honors to walk along someone as they discover their faith. It was one of the most joyous events of my life.

8) What historical figure would you like to spend a day with?

I would like to spend the day with Georgia O’Keefe, often called the mother of American modernism . She was such a pioneer in American art, creating pieces for over seven decades. I feel like she had a unique appreciation for nature and such incredible talent to convey her feelings to her work. I would like to hear her explanation of how she sees the world, and then her process of creating her art.

9) What would we be surprised to learn about you?

Most people are surprised to learn I am an avid college basketball fan! While I watch teams from all across the country, my favorite team is Purdue! Boiler Up! I often travel to watch them play, as I have a new personal goal to attend a game in each of the Big 10 arenas.
