New Faculty Interview- Garrett Saul

We caught up with one of our new Upper School Teachers, Mr. Garrett Saul, in order to help the community learn more about him.

1. Are you married? Family?

I will have been married to Andrea for ten years on August 9th, 2024! We have five kids together: Irena , Theodore , Quinton , Eden and a baby who will arrive at the end of June!

2. Where did you go to college?

I went to Moody Bible Institute and received a B.A. in biblical exposition. I then went to seminary at Grand Rapids Theological Seminary for my MDiv.

3. What gets you up in the morning?

All the possibility there is to learn something new each day! Life is a gift and I can’t believe I get to enjoy each moment serving the Lord with my family! On a more practical note, I have a ruthless internal alarm clock that gets me up at 5 a.m. every morning.

4. What are your favorite hobbies?

I enjoy reading, trying new recipes, and going for walks. I am also an avid (mediocre!) chess player and play guitar. Oh, I also enjoy listening to music albums in one sitting.

5. What is one of your hidden talents?

This question is slightly ironic since I’ll be using my hidden talent all the time at Coram Deo – but I know Konie Greek and Latin! I’m also pretty good at Super Smash Bros. since I played way too many video games as a kid.

6. What is your favorite book and why?

This is too hard! Here are my top three: Eugene Peterson’s memoir “The Pastor” has shaped my pastoral imagination like no other book (other than the Bible). It’s thoughtful, hilarious, and hopeful. “Brothers K” by David James Duncan is a beautiful modern novel about the powerful bonds of family amid massive differences. T.F. Torrance’s two-volume work “Incarnation and Atonement” is the best (but underrated!) systematic theology in recent history. It reads like poetry and I often return to it for inspiration.

7. How long have you lived in Indiana and why do you enjoy living here?

We’ll be moving to Indianapolis at the end of July. We’re excited to be two hours away from Andrea’s parents in Ohio!

8. What meaningful event in your past significantly influenced your life?

My marriage to Andrea has significantly influenced my life. She is a stellar woman who has made me a better man and therefore better in every possible way. I couldn’t imagine my life without her or our children.

9. What historical figure would you like to spend a day with?

I would like to spend a day with St. Augustine. After reading his “Confessions” I was left wanting more!

10. What would we be surprised to learn about you?

I won a male pageant in my senior year in my high school of 2500 students just so I could get two free prom tickets and a free tux rental. All that hard work was worth every penny!
