Extras Insider Tennis Edition – by Clara Vasey

Tennis is a beautifully versatile sport. From Wimbledon to friends on a neighborhood court, millions of people enjoy playing tennis. This sport has been brought to Coram Deo by Mrs. Dick, Mrs. Strickland, and Mr. Dharma. All three are CDA parents and passionately invested in our school. This year tennis club is every Monday from 3:30 to 4:30 on March 31-May 12. Grades 4-11 are welcome, and any level of skill will be happily accepted. Mrs. Strickland says of the goal for the club, “Our main hope is to get kids interested in the sport of tennis. It encourages physical activity, teamwork, and mental focus with a positive attitude.”

As with many other sports, tennis builds life skills and virtues. It especially prompts kids to stay mentally strong through long matches and keep the focus necessary to stay with the ball. Mrs. Strickland speaks to the value of tennis for life: “Tennis is also a sport of honesty and integrity, which are great characteristics to develop in young kids both inside and outside the classroom.” Tennis is a lifelong sport, of which Mrs. Dick is a great example.  She played tennis competitively through college and still enjoys it with her daughters today.

This year tennis club will be mainly about learning the basics and developing skills so that the students have the tools to play tennis for a lifetime. There may be a tennis team for upper schoolers in future years, but this season is a success. Students are learning new things and building character all while having fun outdoors, thanks to a few CDA parents who love tennis and are willing to serve.

Soli Deo Gloria,
