Bullseye! The sport of archery has been around for a thousand years, satisfying each participant with the twang of the bow and the thud of an arrow well struck. This year, CDA has invested in this classical sport through Archery Club. Our PE teacher, Mrs. Hodges, has joyfully led the program this year, appreciating the focus and self-discipline it teaches. As this is her first year teaching archery, she has enjoyed giving students the opportunity to try it out or continue itwith their friends.

As this past Tuesday was the last club meeting, Mrs. Hodges says that the best thing that happened because of archery was the relationships built between the students, even of different grades. Archery is an individual sport, but since there were six consistent attendees, the students became close as they learned the skills of the sport.

Archery is all about hand-eye coordination, patience, and precision. The hardest part is being able to aim one’s bow relative to the distance of the target. While learning this, there were a few funny mishaps along the way, says seventh- grader Ava Roney. She giggles as she tells of arrows hitting the ceiling and an accidental bullseye. She loved getting to know the younger girls that attended.

Archery Club met once a month from 3:30-5:00 inside the PE room. They used equipment that CDA received from a grant a few years ago. Those who attended learned the skills well, and Mrs. Hodges hopes to gradually teach archery to enough kids that CDA can make an archery team that competes with other schools. As for this season, the students added a sport to their repertoire and built lasting relationships. On the whole, Archery Club was on target.
