Habits of the Heart

On Thursday evening September 8th, 2016, Coram Deo held a Parent Workshop for parents of our Kindergarten and first grade students. The event was well attended and provided a great time for our teachers to communicate to our parents in more detail about the habits of the heart that we work to instill in our youngest students each day. As a school committed to being in partnership with parents, the workshop afforded us a great opportunity to continue working together toward our shared goals of pointing our students and children toward a Biblical world view and attitude of heart. As was mentioned in the workshop, our focus is not on mere "behavioral modification". Our goals run deeper, and as a result require more digging and effort to accomplish. The evening reminded me once again how irreplaceable it is to have parents who share the mission and vision of our school, and how grateful I am for each of you.

For those unaware of the Habits of the Heart we focus on in the Lower School (grades K-6), they are provided below.

Habit #1: Attention

Fixing the mind and body steadily on the matter at hand, and following directions.

Habit #2: Obedience

Responds immediately and completely to authority and accepts consequences willingly.

Habit #3: Respect

Display good manners and uses self control in words and actions.

Habit #4: Responsibility

Takes care of personal belongings and school property, and completes tasks within an alloted time frame.

Aristotle said that we are what we repeatedly do. He went on to say that excellence was not just an act, but a habit. We would be hard pressed to find a single problem (of our own making) that does not have at its roots, the absence of one of these four habits of the heart. May God help us partner together well to instill these habits in the hearts and minds of our students.

In Christ,

Kent Welch
